The Malazan Empire simmers with discontent, bled dry by interminable warfare, bitter infighting and bloody confrontations with the formidable Anomander Rake and his Tiste Andii. In that Malazan Book of the Fallen, the historians will write of our suffering, and they will speak of it as the suffering of those who served the Crippled God. Vast legions of gods, mages, humans, dragons and all manner of creatures play out the fate of the Malazan Empire in this first book in a major epic fantasy series. Steven Erikson's Malazan Book Of The Fallen has dozens and dozens of memorable characters and plots that twist and turn across continents dimensions and time. In this epic fantasy series, Erikson draws on his twenty years of experience as an anthropologist and archaeologist, as well as his expert storytelling skills. This isn't a problem though as there is always a progressive unveiling of new cultures, mythology and mysteries to keep you entertained and interested. Mr Erikson has tried different ideas on writing through the series and I didn't think they all worked a 100% (one book was done with a character, Kruppe. Reading the first book in this series you think 'this is fairly engaging and well written', but the admiration for the depth and complexity grows as you continue through the series until you are in awe. Steven Erikson and Ian Cameron Esslemont have in my opinion created the most accomplished world building feat (or should that be multiverse) since Tolkien.
